Will barefoot shoes keep my feet warm in winter?

On our social media channels and in customer service, we frequently get asked whether GROUNDIES® barefoot shoes keep the feet warm enough in winter.

A valid question, since the extremely thin sole is one of the main features of a barefoot shoe. In conventional shoes, the thick sole forms a barrier between the foot and the ground. The thinner the sole, the closer the foot is to the ground – which is usually cold in winter.

But don't worry: Barefoot shoes have several advantages that ensure that your feet don't get cold despite being close to the ground. As with other parts of our body: if we keep our muscles active, we're less likely to get cold. It is exactly this effect that your feet benefit from in barefoot shoes:

Their foot-shaped fit with a wide toe box gives the foot plenty of room to move around freely. Also the thin, flexible sole provides natural freedom of movement. You can really feel the ground beneath your feet including every bump. Whether gravel, asphalt or lawn, the ground gently massages the bottom side of your feet and stimulates the blood circulation. The result: your feet will feel warm.

So as long as you are in motion, you will hardly feel the cold. What you should avoid, however, is long periods of standing without activity. When your feet are at rest, the muscles in your feet and toes have no way to keep them warm.

Ultimately, however, the choice of the right winter barefoot shoes depends on your individual sensitivity to temperature. Some of us only feel comfortable in thickly lined boots, while others get through the winter in sneakers without flinching. That is why in our collection you will find the right shoe for every preference. Oslo or Milano – it is up to you.
